Looking Up at the Ride

Fairground scale at Canada's Wonderland in Toronto, Ontario, and the childish instinct to reach upward.

Some photographs keep the feeling of being smaller than the thing you are looking at.

A hand enters the bottom of the frame, the ride spins above it, and the whole image tilts toward childhood for a second. The gesture is simple, almost instinctive.

Looking up is its own kind of memory.

A playful frame can still have restraint if the gesture is true. For family photography, especially with children, I watch for that instinctive movement before it becomes too directed.
