Black Sand in Hawaii
Black sand, blue water, and the way Hupuna Beach, Hawaii changes the feeling of colour.

Black sand changes the temperature of a photograph.
The water looks brighter against it, the figures feel smaller, and the edge of the shore carries more weight than it would on pale sand. Hawaii has a way of making colour feel physical, especially where volcanic ground meets clear blue water.
The image is simple, but the contrast does the work.
I keep photographs like this close because they remind me how much place can shape emotion. Whether I am making travel images, Alberta engagement photographs, or documentary family work, the setting should feel specific enough to be remembered.
