The Formal Picture Loosened
A grad session reflection on formal portraits, loosened posture, and making room for personality.

A grad session has its own kind of ceremony.
There is the formal picture everyone expects, and then there is the moment after it loosens: shoulders drop, someone laughs, the person in the frame starts to feel like themselves again. That is usually where the better photograph lives.
I still respect the clean portrait. It matters. But I try to make enough room around it for personality to show up.
For Calgary grad photography and family sessions, that balance matters. The photograph should mark the milestone without sanding off the person who reached it.
