On Pale Stone

A travel reflection from the top of the ruins, where the view was beautiful and the climb down felt uneasy.

People gathered across pale stone in a dry landscape

The top of the ruins made the view feel earned.

Stone, heat, and distance all gathered around the frame, but the stronger memory was the climb down waiting afterward. Beauty and nerves can sit surprisingly close together.

I like travel photographs that hold a little of what the body remembers. Not just what the place looked like, but how it felt to stand there.

Sometimes the photograph is calm because the person making it was not. That contrast becomes part of the memory.
