Boat in the Middle
A note on still water, distance, and a small boat holding the centre of a lake.
Still water makes small things feel intentional.
A boat in the middle of a lake can hold the entire frame because there is almost nothing else competing for attention. The surrounding dark hills make the emptiness feel calm rather than vacant.
Quiet photographs still need an anchor.
Negative space is useful in emotional photography because it gives the viewer somewhere to rest. I use the same restraint in family and engagement sessions across Alberta, especially when the setting already has its own calm.
