The In-Between Frame

Why the almost-moments often become the photographs people keep returning to.

The in-between frame is usually not the photograph anyone planned.

It happens while someone is adjusting a sleeve, looking for a child, stepping through wind, or laughing because the pose fell apart. It carries less performance and more evidence.

Those are the frames I watch for because they tend to age with the least effort.

The in-between frame is central to documentary photography because it holds what people did not know they were giving away. In weddings, engagements, and family sessions, those almost-moments often become the most remembered images.
